Shahid Online – Pierce Brosnan has made his stance clear he believes it is a “given” that the next James Bond should be British. In a recent interview with the Sunday Telegraph, the former 007 actor shared his thoughts on the franchise’s future, particularly regarding who should take up the mantle after Daniel Craig.
Brosnan, who played Bond from 1995 to 2002, also expressed confidence in Amazon’s acquisition of creative control over the franchise. “It takes great courage for them to let go,” said Brosnan, who is Irish. “I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.” While acknowledging the evolution of the Bond series, he remains adamant that the character’s British roots should not be compromised.
With Daniel Craig stepping away from the role, speculation is mounting over who will become the next James Bond. British actors James Norton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Theo James are currently among the bookmakers’ favorites.
Pierce Brosnan, having played the suave secret agent in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, knows the weight of the role. Historically, Bond has been played primarily by British actors, with the exception of Australian George Lazenby and Brosnan himself. While names such as California-born Austin Butler and Irish actors Paul Mescal and Cillian Murphy have been suggested. Brosnan’s comments reinforce the traditional British identity of the character.

American Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood once revealed that he was approached to take on the role after Sean Connery’s departure in 1967 but declined, stating. “It didn’t feel right for me to be doing it.” This further highlights the long-standing belief that Bond should remain a distinctly British icon.
The next Bond film remains shrouded in mystery, with no official casting announcement or production timeline in place. Under the recent agreement, long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will maintain co-ownership of the franchise, while Amazon MGM Studios will take creative control.
Pierce Brosnan reflected on his time as Bond with pride, saying. “History has been passed on, and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies I made with Barbara and Michael.”
The last Bond film, No Time to Die (2021), marked the end of Craig’s tenure. Given the extensive production time required for a blockbuster film. The gap between No Time to Die and its successor could potentially break the record for the longest period between Bond releases.
As anticipation builds, one thing remains certain Pierce Brosnan’s firm belief that James Bond should always be British is a sentiment shared by many longtime fans of the franchise.
